For My Father

It's taken us a long, long time To get where we are today, So many things we didn't do So much we didn't say, For all those years we were apart And went our separate ways, We tried to find a different path To help us fill our days. But even though, as hard I tried To fill that empty space There wasn't anyone I found Who could ever take your place. And I had almost given up On finding you again. But you came back into my life This time as a friend. So now that we are older,  The years go by so fast We also know the reasons why Nothing ever lasts. Except that bond formed long ago On that September morn, When you were only twenty-one And I had just been born.
