The Night Before

When the sun slowly sinks below the crest of the land, When darkness has fallen and closed its black hand. When the silence is deafening, and the room stagnantly calm; I begin my long lonely wait for the imminent dawn. Then the snores of a man first quietly low,  Start louder and louder with every swift blow. I toss and I turn, and I struggle to sleep, But depression and worry they strike me too deep. I am no different than anyone else; My conscience does fight me in spite of myself. My memories all haunt me and spin in my head, As I lie here shaking a mere shell in my bed. The thoughts of my past, most happy, some sad; They flash all before me the times that I've had. The attempts to quiet my thoughts are all quite in vain, My fears of tomorrow refuse to be tamed. Tonight is the night that my freedom is cut short; Tonight is the night before I go into court.
