The Legacy

A brown shoe box, plain, no writing      with a lid, plain, no writing Inside - some string, a pair of glasses      and some pictures, pictures of family These pictures tell a story of long ago In that plain brown shoe box with no writing      there is a wallet, a medic alert bracelet      and some tapes and CD's All that's left of a man I really didn't know And on the bottom, in a plain brown envelope On it is marked, "Last Will And Testament"      of a man I hardly knew, a man I called Dad Written on the first page, in long hand, I read "To my children who didn't know me, and who didn't care to - I leave all my wordly possessons here in this shoe box Wrapped in love, and on the bottom are my tears - I leave you all this because you couldn't hear or take the time      To listen. Take the time to listen my children, to your children Take the time to hear, and you will gather much more than      ...what's in this plain brown box with really nothing in it"
