Forbidden Flight

For many years, I've traveled long; I've stopped to hear the Sirens' song, And never once drew near to wrong. The music wasn't there. I've seen the Garden of Delights, And never yielded to the sights; I've passed her gates a thousand nights, And never paid the fare. There's no temptation there. But once, just once, I chanced to spy A twinkling star up in the sky. Twas just a flicker caught my eye, And mesmerized my stare. I rose, enticed by colored light That offered promise in the night. And closer still I came in flight, To meet her in the air, And found a comet there. How beautiful this banner bright, Whose destiny was heaven's height; How glorious the blinding light, Enrapturing my sight! I moved still closer, more amazed I longed to mingle in her haze; To travel with her all my days Through God's eternal night. But something wasn't right. As I approached , with all my might, I lept into her inner light, But only faltered in the night, And fell to earth once more. For I, an earthly form indeed,  Could not attain to Heaven's speed; With bones that chill, and limbs that bleed, Twas but a dream to soar. I saw the light no more. For mine's a world beneath the sky,  And I know I will never fly. But though I'm grounded 'til I die, One memory I'll claim: That once upon a starry night, My passions rose to Heaven's height. And though I fell, I still delight To think how close I came. I'll never be the same. By David Ashley Little
