Summer Sanctuary The old tree arched a canopy, Despite summers heat it stood. A leafy refuge of old gold and green. A haven of living wood. . . Neighborhood urchins all found retreat. Like bees inevitably drawn By the promise of sustenance, cool and sweet, To this sanctuary on my lawn. Sturdy boughs beckoned lithesome pursuit Through this maze of leaves and limbs. Relinquishing treasures of dusk-purple fruit In clusters of natures whim. Branches sigh, shift under the weight Of legs in cadence swung, To the melody of secrets and somedays Sung between mouthfuls of giggles and plums. Pansies and hollyhocks incline to a breeze, Whisper in honeyed delight. Dance in the shadow of laughter and dreams In the shade of sun the dappled light. A citadel, lasting times fanciful notion. A sentinel, the old tree stood. And God looking down on this bit of creation saw it was very good. |
