I Knew What I Wanted Most

I knew what I wanted most When I was seventeen, rushing to meet life In a Nash Rambler American with fold-down seats Full ash trays, and James Dean still playing On the big screen at the Harper Woods Drive In Theater Even though he was dead, buried, and sending Psychic messages to his fans from somewhere near Omaha. My prom dress was yellow tule, strapless Two crinolines underneath, making it hard to sit But nobody sits down when they're seventeen. I stood outside that pleasure palace The Grosse Pointe Yacht Club in suburban Detroit And watched half-child, half adult shadows Laughing, embracing, swaying to the sounds Of the Four Freshman and the Diamonds (Sha Boom, Sha Boom) And, knowing this moment was seminal Stored it--the breathlessness of it-- One moment, special, snatched up to be remembered. Listen, they're playing our song.
