Who Was It?

Who was there to hear your cries, and bandage your scraped knees? Who sang to you, those lullabies? I know it wasn't me. Who was it then, that dressed you up - put ribbons in your hair? Who watched you drink from your first cup? I know I wasn't there. Who saw your face when you first smiled, and bounced you on their knee? Who gently wiped your runny nose, and rocked you back to sleep? Who watched you take those wobbly steps, when you first learned to walk?  Who taught you how to say the words, when you first learned to talk? Who helped you pick your first school clothes, and walked you to the bus? Whose heart ached as it pulled away, while you made such a fuss? Who went with you on "Teacher's Day", and joined the P.T.A.? Who watched you step onto that stage, as part of your school play? Who bought you your first evening dress, and warned you - "Not too late"? Who sat to wait for your return, the night of your first date? You cannot gage the hurt and pain, nor can you count the cost - Of missing all those "firsts" with you, that caused this sense of loss. I only know I could not share in who you have become. I only know I wasn't there, to hear you call me "Mom".

Additional Notes:
When my daughter was 9 months old, she was stolen from me (along with her 2yr old brother). I did not know where she was for 14 years, and did not see her again for 17 years. Someday I will give her this poem in hopes she will understand. This is for her.
