The Devil You Know

The devil you know, you can keep him at bay. The devil you don't know can principles sway! Because when your guard's down and you're unaware, He slips past defenses before you prepare. Those who are strong, he won't boldly attack, He weakens "foundations" to come at their back. He'll plant seeds of doubt between family and friends Which grow, if they're nurtured, 'til loving ties rend. All have a weakness, the devil knows well, And he does his best to entice us to hell. His lures of "more power", of "fame", and of "wealth", Make him out a hero while covering his stealth. The devil you know "turns you off" by his acts Of overt aggression and vile secret pacts. The devil you don't laughs, for he is aware Of your imperfections.  You'd better take care! For if you're not wary, he'll get you to fall. Not in "one fell swoop", but in something so small That you will neglect to correct it, until Pride won't let you swallow such a bitter pill! What started out "simple" he will complicate Until your "dislike" has been turned into "hate". And you will be bound, not by one cord or two, But by all you've done you said you'd NEVER do! The devil you know then reveals his "surprise" And, too late in life, you will then realize The devil you know and you don't ARE THE SAME - And he's won your soul!  "Thanks for playing my game!"
