A Personal Letter to My Personal Muse

I write and write, my dear, Stringing words, like beads, together Year after year after year. Spinning words end over end, Not one word of which is new. Just helping old ideas to bend Into my personal point of view. I write and write, my dear, And pray my words reach out To someone...someday...somewhere.. Who may have begun to doubt That so few words rhymed into verse Could shape a smile or fetch a tear. I write and write, my dear, And I have every writer's fear... No, not the fear of ridicule, Or that someone calls me fool, Or that my meaning won't be clear. No, my muse, my greatest fear Is of that awful, wretched day When you depart and leave me here, When you decide to fly away.
