The Cache

Swinging my new metal detector Hunting for coins, old trinkets, adventure My six-year old grandson and I Unearth a cache of bones and a bottle cap. Maybe a person, possibly an animal, He asks slowly and quietly As though his voice would awaken Spirits in this newly discovered grave. Hand on his shoulder, I say playfully, Possibly the remains of a dinosaur's lunch As I carefully pick up a dried-out T-bone, an old chicken breast and the bottle cap. Sure, Pop, he says, his eyes twinkling That bone's probably from a T-Rex Who washed down his chicken dinner with a bottle of diet Coke.
