In Anticipation

She glances at the door, ears straining for the sound: the muffled steps on carpeted floor - while the vintage wine chills, and the catered gourmet food awaits a verdict. Rearranging the napkins, she passes time, pacing the room, her heart fluttering at the sound of a car stopping,  then with squealing tires driving off, the sound not quite human: the call of the in-heat feline. She hesitates, a hand on the telephone, controlling the impulse, she lives each passing second, counting the lost hours. On the mantel, their photograph stirring memories of sun-bright days. Withholding thoughts of what might not be, then in teary frustration clears away: the table, the food, the wine, the hopes. She wearily straightens - and the doorbell rings.
