My Friend

Thirty-one years ago you came on a warm July day. Bringing with you immense love, you were a gift from above. Your laugh and smile went on for miles. Your beauty and grace lit up your face. We were like one, you and me. Together, now, only in my dreams. But I can still recall the joy you brought to all. And I will always remember those nights in September. When football games reigned, and our friendship remained. You were my best friend, always willing to lend a shoulder to cry on, but in an instant you were gone. A friendship was shattered, torn apart and battered. Evil lured you in with promises of sin. Now here I stand ten years since with only memories to reminisce. I never got a chance to say, “I miss you” in my own silly way.  You’re an angel now, my sweet, watching over your children as they sleep. But your love will carry on even though you are now gone.
