Morning at Five-Thirty Before the shimmering heat stuns the dusty grapevines before sharp voices splinter above the greasy spatter of frying eggs, my bare legs press against the anchor of cold cement steps as the liquid-silver song of a meadowlark tumbles across the milky sky, and beyond the lilac hedge, the soft gray weeping of a mourning dove tries to hold back the coming day. |
