Romantic's Delight (revised)
Beyond the oak, dripping of moss across the harbor, deep below An iron clad coffin, her crew lost Dormant waiting, on their tale to unfold In still dark, waters lie his motionless body, given to glory Intact a token of love, it survives the decay of time, to tell his story To romance the heart, "passionately crown" secrets revealed, a captain's love Encased in the tomb, of a submarine down the past released, to the future above Once handed to him, by his love a gold coin, kept close at hand For when he felt, like giving up her memory would be, his legs to stand This tattered token, escape it gave from the reaper's bullet, keeping score Saving his life, for a watery grave To meet the same fate, of his love before For also his love, was taken by water after Shiloh dealt him, a wounded leg Crippled in body, the spirit faltered He wished it were him, taken instead Courageously "bent", he moved on dareing death, at it's every door Taking a mission, to prove Beauregard wrong and sink the housatonic, to the ocean floor Steadfast the Hunley, and her crew sailed through the dark, that erie night To give Charleston's killer, it's evil due for a dying South, to even the fight Dixon would prove, what will can do against the odds, so steeply stacked For him and his, ill fated crew "The housatonic", they Did attack Down she went, swallowed by the sea as the Hunley scrambled, desperately away Her mission had answered, Charleston's plea her signal received, across the bay But no more, would the eyes of men set upon the Hunley, and her crew As they waited, at the harbors end a darkened silence, their only view..... Dixon now rests, embosomed by his love beyond the shores, by the immortal tide His coin left behind, for romantics to sing of the ageless heart, where love resides
I revised some things in this poem I recently submitted. I am hoping it reads smoother now.
