Mom Left Me In Charge

Ma's in the hospital, I will fill in, Laundry, cleaning, cookin' for kin. The cast iron stove heated with wood, Cooked on the top, buns in the hood. Old washer, with a hand cranked ringer, Washing's a challenge for a beginner. Hang clothes on the line by the elm tree, Ironed and folded for six and me. Plans for supper just like Ma would do, Food in the cellar, something for stew. Preserves on shelves, meats from the beams, Kraut in casks, jars of food, all the means. For supper one night, I'll bake a pie, Ma's cookbook recipe caught my eye. Supper's done, I brought on dessert, Words of approval for my hard work. When the first bite brought a loud scream, Maybe there's something wrong with the cream. I made a mistake with my pumpkin pie, Pickling spice in error, made me cry.

Additional Notes:
This poem is in memory of my dear Mother. I was only 10 years old and Mom had to go in the hospital for surgery and being next to the oldest, she put me in charge of the household. It was the beginning of using the many things she taught me.
