Shadows and Shade It crashed, smashed, slashed a bursting, blaze of fire billowing forth Souls swirled to heaven unseen shadows melting in the morning air The sun dazzled the blue sky Shimmering glass floated noiselessly Screams and cries filled the silent pauses between curiosity and fear In panic, they ran, while a smoking, roaring avalanche erupted from the crumbling fortress It loomed over me I ran -- no looking back! A black cloud snuffed out the sun Darkness came and darkness stayed Only shadows and shade remained All color gone! Deafening sounds ripped through the day turned night Sirens sliced the stifling, choking, dusty air All that remained were shadows and shade There was nothing to see-- only funerals and graves There was nothing to do-- only hoping and grieving In the shadows and shade that was all that remained Sunrays tease open my eyes, red and inflamed A shadow cast across my bed Blue eyes and luminous smile Joey shakes my shoulder "Wake up, Daddy. You promised we could see the sun rise today!" |
Additional Notes:
This was first submitted to The Albany Poetry Workshop last week.
God bless all those who mourn, all those who feel the sadness, all those who
need God, but can't find Him, all those who feel anger and can't let it go, all
those who want to write about this tragedy and somehow can't---at least not just
yet. God bless us one and all! NOTE: Punctuation was very deliberately left out
in some parts.
