Judgement

My day now complete then came the call, the ambulance approaching telling us all. Extended requests for an integral alert, bringing an 18 month old boy whose seriously hurt. Current information not sounding good,  each of us prepared, all understood. A child run over by his family’s car, head bleeding, body limp, alive so far. They carry him in on the stretcher, so small, everyone working hard, all of us recall.  My task is to confer with the mom and dad, awaiting concerned, they perceive it’s bad. Seeking to console, considerate of their pain, booze from their breath I was forced to restrain. Bewildered by emotions more than annoyed, they’d been drinking NOT guarding their boy. Judgement was perplexing at present time, mercy despite fury for their crime. Torment prolonged while we waited, having to choose; empathy or hatred! In years before, this had never occurred, sincere testing of my  humanity now stirred. Feeling more compassion as I stood by, yet anger lingered, my heart couldn’t lie.

Additional Notes:
Dedicated to a beautiful 18 month old boy, who needlessly died of an alcohol related death. Difficult as this was, I stayed in contact with the parents who have never drank again. A lesson in life that one never gets over.
