Come Talk To Me

Why are you shaking like a leaf? As you sit on your bed trembling memories in your head seem like dreams disconnected. Please listen to the words I say, "You can always talk to me." The days do indeed grow longer with silence and loneliness all around. You search and search for a better place, always looking for higher ground. I’ll pull the curtains back, let in the sunshine, give you hope and inspiration to carry on. Oh mother, I see before me a lady so frail, at times confused and crying in despair. It is as if I am in a dream world All I want is to give you better care. I feel so helpless, no matter my stature or station in life. I remember words you once spoke to me, "Here now, don’t cry, it'll be all right. Lay your head on my shoulder, I’ll tell you a story of long, long ago.” You always knew what to say, though I knew not what I felt. The content was least important, the quality and texture of emotion was salvation to all my fears. So, rest your head on my shoulder now, and if tears run down your cheek, never you mind, they will always dry in the fresh air from the morning sky. You will be happy once again, and smile if only for a moment. And during that short space and time that moment will seem like eternity. Remember the sunshine, forget the rain. Won’t you please come talk to me?

Additional Notes:
This poem was written for my dear mother who we had to put in a nursing home in her declining years. That is one of the hardest tasks anyone can face in their entire life. She accepted it, but only because there was no other choice. God bless everyone's mother.
