'Twas the Night Before....

Outside the trees glistened, there was snow, soft and white. The town lights did twinkle on this Christmas Eve night. Her mother was dancing and trimming the tree. Her brother was sleeping, he was just only three. She walked in the kitchen to see Mom’s delights. Krista noticed instead a big hole in her tights. It was right on the knee, must have snagged on the chair. She had pie on her butt and gravy down to there. Her Dad in the bathroom was taking a shower. Krista looked at the clock, he had just half an hour! She had plugged in the lights and had vacuumed the rug. She looked at her brother who was as snug as a bug. Her Dad in a hurry, he slipped on the floor. His suspenders had caught on the old oaken door. With a rubberband jolt he smacked the door twice. Then bounced off the walls maybe once, maybe thrice. He pulled his suspenders then straightened his pants. He tucked in his shirt, round the room gave a glance. He grabbed up his coat from the back of a chair. He walked to the mirror to smooth back his hair. He buttoned up his coat. he looked good in his suit. But when he looked down he was missing a boot! Krista looked round the room even under the couch. She looked under brother and in Mother’s red pouch. But there in the corner by the magazine rack. Stood his left boot,  so shiny and black. Now dressed up and ready he kissed Mom goodnight. And gave me a bear hug that was two bears too tight! He waved bye to brother with his head gave a jerk. He snatched up his hat, out the door, off to work. She watched out the window for her Father to show. Soon he’d be leaving in his boots, in the snow. She could smell the hot cocoa pumpkin pie, cookies too! Her breath on the window had clouded her view. With the sleeve of her dress she wiped the glass clear. Outside on the lawn silver bells she did hear. She tapped on the window, her Dad raised his head. She thought him so handsome  in his suit all of red. He had hair of snow white and a big ol' round belly, That shook when he laughed like a bowl of green jelly. And she heard him exclaim as he flew out of sight, ‘Merry Christmas to all and to all a goodnight!’
