The Knight and the Flower

Once there was a young knight Who in his travels found a flower Its soft petals curved with temptation And its nectar gleamed like moistened lips He had fought many battles But had never fallen, nor lost his stand Yet on this lonesome day he knelt to  Take this flower into hand He brought the soft petals upward The sweet scent kissing his face And traveling downward into his soul Expanding to fill an empty place The knight drew a deep breath Taking the essence of sweetness in A smile on his lips, a tear in his eye As he considered what could have been  The knight was in sleepy ecstasy  When from a nearby farm A wondering hermit came along  And gazed at the knight in alarm The hermit asked if he had drank the scent Knowing his fears on sight Tear stained eyes looked at him And a nod was returned from the knight Innoces sed mortifer is the name  Said the hermit as he shook his head sadly The hermit lowered his eyes It meant innocent but deadly The brave knight looked sadly at the man  And once more at the flower he had found He whispered softly and closed his eyes Before dying on that uncaring piece of ground
