Violence in America Vivid color on the sports page of grown adults trading punches. Boys stare in awe behind a transparent wall. Young faces are wide-eyed, impressionable. A teacher feigns shock at the display of childish rage while penalties are meted-out in idle minutes. Another page proclaims the right to bear arms, "...the inalienable right to protect home and family..." Still another page mourns the death of a child "by accidental discharge of a handgun." An ad for the latest video game brags of superior graphics. Blood splatters from the pretend shots of a pretend weapon. Another box office smash presents scenes of medieval gorging. An actor is lauded for his realistic portrayal of the brave knight refusing to give up his bloodied sword. "Just in time for school vacation". Meanwhile the anniversary of the Columbine Massacre approaches quietly, unnoticed by the mother of two young boys dressed in feaux fatigues as they play "patriot games" in the toy aisle of Wal-Mart. "Bang, bang. You're dead" |
