Homeless

They live in camps under overpasses in a vast slum near the thrumming heart of the city. Late in the day, they depart the land to stand on streets with their leathered faces and weathered cardboard signs, in need, pleading for money. Sadly lined signs that vary from HUNGRY to NEED A BEER and one day, a man appeared and flashed a note, VIETNAM VET. He was getting a stash of cash from every car. The next day, the ruthless vet had left  and an old man, toothless and grinning, hefted the winning message. The homeless tribe has inscribed messages on the columns near their camp. "Throw change from your cars, please. Quarters only." Beggars can be choosers. One stooped, limping woman slowly pushes a lopping, shopping cart piled with dear possessions of her many years. Her hair is dust-mop gray, stringy, and in disarray. Hot or cold, she wears layers of old clothes like an artichoke. Is there no one who cares about her broken heart? These days in our squalid sprawl, people rarely give handouts at all. One wintry day, I went out of my way to ask a ragged, skeletal man if I could take him to a shelter. "They have rules there," he said, "and I have to live free." The spate of government waste when funds could be funneled into centers with mentors, sunshined rooms, decent fare, and medical care. And a big back yard with trees for those who need to live free under a canopy of stars, Mars, and the moon to festoon their liberty.

Additional Notes:
Most of the homeless in our area are mental patients summarily discharged from state institutions and have no where to live.
