Not A Dog

This is not a dog; not black nor brown nor otherwise This is perchance a heinous ghoul in ghastly hellish guise It comes at night as ghosts are wont and walks right through my walls Paints gruesome pictures on my door and wakes me with its calls  This is not a dog - a dog is small and easy tamed This is perchance a mighty dragon, real but yet unnamed It breaths out fire straight from Gehenna, scorns my shaking fist And though it scars me every day, it's known they don't exist This is not a dog, that I should live seven fold more This is perhaps a phoenix to rise and chase me more And though it die a thousand deaths, I die not many less And in its rising ends the ashes of my happiness This is not a dog that I could fight and maybe kill This is perhaps the king of beasts devouring what it will His fickle hunger sated by his subjects that once feared His awesome roar, his splendid teeth, his mighty flowing beard This is not a big black dog, a thing that is without This is the avalanche of fear, the prophesy of doubt This is a monster gnawing on my very soul and mind And though I pray it's just a dog no answer can I find.

Additional Notes:
This is of course a reference to Churchill's "black dog". If you didn't recognise this, you might want to consider reading up about it, and then re-reading the poem before you critique it.
