I Promise As I wait to march proudly onto stage for the prize; fidgeting, I make sure the tassel is perfectly placed. Clearing an already dry throat, I rehearse in my mind a simple acceptance speech. This is a long-awaited day, signifying both an ending and beginning of youthful dreams; a passage between childhood into anticipated, yet sometimes overrated, adult world. No more traffic jams at lockers in school halls, laughing with friends, before rushing to class. I promise, I will not forget their friendship, as tearfully, familiar faces are left behind; I will take their loyalty to the next friend. No more teachers, sometimes scolding, but most of the time encouraging me to achieve my best. I promise, I will not forget the mentors who taught me how to tap into the well of my hidden talents, and take pride in the knowledge I found there. No more waiting for bells to ring or buses to roll; no tardy slips to worry about or attendance records. I promise, I will remember each day finished, letting the discipline learned carry me into goals I dream of achieving in my world of tomorrow. Because I leave behind more good times than bad; with Diploma in hand, hot tears of uncertainty flow. I promise, I will face my tomorrow with the dignity I carry, as I step from this stage; graduating to the next dream, remembering the achievement of today. |
