Down To Earth Loam or loess, marl or moraine, the substance matters not to one who lives with the land. One who knows the worth of the earth whether rill, tarn, or lea, glen, fen, or dell by the sea. One with a grand, expanded purview, aware of each clean clod-slobber, stem, vine, and flittered whin. River or swirl- shining stream, asperging as it skirls to the brine. Heather and sedge roots gaining deep purchase into the ground: staunch, strong even when besieged by cold squelch-slap of mold or other raiding invader. Desmesne or demersal, dappled alder or aspen shudder, or the flicker-glint of embedded flint. Forever time-rooted as one who lives close to the earth paces the land in words to find his place, his footing. Stream stroller, woods walker, cliff climber, tulip tender: bound by the deep-downness of earth, aware of health and worth in being grounded. Becoming sure-of-foot by understanding a span of the land. |
