Please do not ask me now to do This thing to prove my love for you. My love’s not yours to win or lose, It’s mine to give to whom I choose, And if I choose to love her too, It does not change my love for you. What treasure did I take away To cause the pain you feel today? It’s you I chose to be my wife, And you’re the one who shares my life. All she will ever share with me Is a word, a glance, a memory. And when I hold you in my arms I do not need another’s charms, Nor could I leave our marriage bed To seek love’s pleasures there instead. So you have nothing then to fear, If you’ll but love and trust me dear. And since I feel no urgent need To repent some evil deed, Please do not ask me now to do This thing to prove my love for you. For if I kill my love for her How long will love for you endure?
